I am in the process of removing the steering box from a '82 300sd. I need some advice on taking it off. Here is my question. Do I need to take off the tie rods from the pitman arm to get the box down and out or can I remove the pitman arm with both rods attached and drop it down out of the way and then remove the steering box?

It is best to remove the tie rods, use the pitman arm as a handle to remove the gear box.

I can't get my hands on a tie-rod removing tool so I must remove the pitman arm with the tie rods attached. Will I have any surprises or must I unload a pile of money to buy the proper tool?
