190E sunroof broken - help fixing?

1991 190E 2.3 - the sunroof works normally except in tilted up mode, the interior panel sags on the driver's side.

A part of the slide/tilt mechanism for the sunroof on the left side broke, and the broken (off) part has the number 124 782 05 47. The dealer could not identify it by that number, and feels it is part of an assembly. I think that assembly is probably part #124 780 05 12. I am a little concerned about what might be involved with its R&R, though Phil at FastLane feels most folks find it an easier repair than anticipated.

Thanks to posts and pics here, I had little problem detaching and removing the interior liner through the roof. I then tried to remove the exterior sunroof panel with four nuts retaining the sunroof studs. The panel was then loose to pivot up, but still captive at the front. It appears that a bracket on each side can have the screws loosened, slid inward, and then the sunroof can be removed. Is this the case? I didn't do it yet for fear there might be an adjustment I would screw up.

Finally, assuming I get the sunroof off, has anyone replaced this broken part, and if so, any tips? Thanks.

Steve

Open the sunroof and remove the chrome rails (cross head screws only, leave the slotted pair at the front alone, they adjust the front height). The rails trap the "feet" at the front of the sunroof to hold the panel down.

The repair is fairly easy, but you need to make sure the panel is correctly positioned fore/aft. It must go all the way up against the front "seal" closed, or the will hang on the rear edge going into tilt mode.

Get both lift angles (the part that is broken) -- the other one will break pretty soon after you repair the first side.

Lubircate with MB sunroof paste only, it's magical stuff. Do NOT use grease, please, it holds amazing amounts of dirt.

Thanks, Peter! I'll just be replacing the one side, since that is all I ordered, but I'll check the other when I do the repair. If the repair goes smoothly, I'll order that too if I have any doubts about its condition, to play it safe.
