After reading the symptoms, I agree that it sounds just like an AMM going bad.

It's pretty simple. Put one in, and if it fixes the problem, well, bob's yer uncle. If not, put your old one back in. But, you should make sure the tranny fluid was proper.

Sorry for bringing this back up after so many months. I was just doing a search to see how many people had situations similar to ours...

We just got our '03 230k sedan serviced for these exact symptoms, even with the service rep telling us that it seemed to be an electronic rather than mechanical problem. They replaced the valve body.
