My transmission on my 86 300e will flare( slow to change) between 3rd and 4th gears. I have read previous posts regarding this problem and remember one of the possible cures was to change the 3-4 accumulator spring to a "stiffer" one. I have a few questions about this procedure:
1. Is this "stiffer spring" available through an MB dealer, if so, does any one know the part number? 2. Has anyone tried this in the past, and was it a success? I'm trying to determine if I should try this route or drop some $$$ for a rebuilt transmission. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. We have used the stiffer springs a few times with mixed success. They are not an MB part.
The only time I use them any more is when I know the internal seals and clutch pack clearances are good. In other words I don't use them to patch an old tranny (150k miles or more). My usual attempts to solve flaring problems involve changing modulator pressure and adjusting control pressure to lower shift points. |

Steve,
Thanks for the info. We'll try changing modulator pressure and adjusting control pressure first. If I still need the "stiffer" spring, can you tell me where to find one. Thanks again, Ken ------------------ 1987 300SDL 1989 300E 1986 300E 1981 300D 1983 240D |

Wouldn't hurt to drain the ATF and change filter and oil, if you haven't do so already.

Jeff,
Thanks for the info, I recently changed the AT fluid and filter, and thanks to one of your earlier posts I also drained the torque converter(while hot). Thanks, for the tips. Ken ------------------ 1987 300SDL 1989 300E 1986 300E 1981 300D 1983 240D |

The springs I use come in a kit sold by a company in Miami. It requires disassembly of the valve body. If you decide to do this let me know and I'll send you a spring.

I read this topic with great interest since I just got my car and have don't know if its ever had the tranny pan off or not yet
(car has 74k miles) Car shifts firmly between 1st and 2nd and 2nd to 3rd is usually smooth as silk but, under full throttle acceleration, car shifts fairly smoothly but there is significant loading and unloading in the torque converter I think. (I have no experience whatsoever with transmissions) but I would describe this force as equivalent to the forces a manual transmission car would have under full throttle acceleration, gears selected fairly smoothly but once next gear is selected you can feel significant thrust as in a manual car. Could I be in the same boat as far as bands are concerned? How much could I expect for a dealer to service? Any feedback whatsoever would be greatly appreciated...Thank you MIKE MCKINNEY ------------------ '91 190E 2.6 |

Mike, I'm not sure, but it doesn't sound like you have a problem, just a strong engine and a working transmission..
