Hey all,
I have an '85 190E 2.3 with 243k miles on it. It's a 5-speed, and I'm wondering if I have to do anything to it, such as changing the fluids, or filter, gasket, etc. I've never one this before, so any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Happy driving, vu |

You treat these just like any other Mercedes. All of the fluids get changed at 30K miles. This includes the diff and tranny.

The factory replacement fluid is Shell ATF type "A". Almost impossible to find anywhere but Dealer. Any good synthetic ATF ie; Mobil 1 should do.

VU,
I’d be interested to know how you make out with the fluid change. I have an ’85 190e 5spd and I’d like to do the change also. Please keep me posted. Be careful about using any old ATF. They probably reccomend type A for a reason. Modern Dexron and mercon fluids have evolved to a point where the additives are good only for automatic transmission seals. These modern fluids are bad for seals in power steering systems, and I expect manual transmissions as well. This is probably why they are recommending the original type A.
I put Mobil One 10W30 in my 240D manual transmission at about 150K miles. I have changed it a few times since staying with the same oil. The transmission now has 533K miles on it, and has never been apart. It still works perfect, makes no noise and leaks no fluid. I recommend that you research this further and be absolutely SURE that modern ATF is okay. If you ruin the seals in a manual it is usually too late when you discover that you lost the lubricant. That is why I suggested only synethetic ATF fluid as type "A" does have special additives
& dextron isn't recommended. On the older cars light weight oil 10w10 was an alternate to Type "A". So Redline MTL or light weight shockproof would be a good sub as well. ------------------ MERCEDES BENZ MASTER GUILD TECHNICIAN (6 TIMES) ASE MASTER TECHNICIAN 27 YEARS DEALER M.B. Larry,
What’s the procedure for changing the Diff & trans fluid? What tools / sizes do you need? Thanks ------------------ 1985 190e 2.3 5spd 98 E320 rims + TV & VCR 1991 Mazda Miata 1991 Yamaha FZR1000 1994 MB S420 (sold) 1994 BMW 318ica (sold) |

Procedure is the same on both, but the fill plug on the transmission is most likely difficult to get to.
Both plugs are probably 14MM Allen type. There is a special tool that will allow you to get into tight spots. Remove the FILL PLUG FIRST! The reason for this is so that you do not drain the fluid, then have no way to get it back in. Then with a drain pan underneath, pull the drain plug. After it has drained, replace the drain plug, fill through the fill hole to specification, which for me in both cases is until it overflows, and then replace the fill plug. Getting the liquids in may take some special equipment. You can probably get a plastic pump of some sort from Pep Boys or some such place. The pump will be more difficult to use on the more viscous rear axle lube. If you have room, get a pump that goes on a five gallon bucket of 80W hypoid gear lube. This is a great setup for the rear axle, but the transmission will take something else because you most likely be using motor oil or whatever from a quart, or gallon container. The plastic pump that I have fits the threads of a one gallon oil bottle. Don't forget the old clothes that you can get stained, this can be a very messy job. Is Mobil 1 ATF the correct fluid for a W124 5 speed? Is this
transmission the same as the 190E 5 speed? I just had synthetic fluid put in, but I think it's a gear weight like 70 or 80. It doesn't seem to shift as well as it did, especially when cold. Thanks.

I suggest "Redline" brand MTL(light weight maual trans fluid) or ATF. I haven't tried Mobil 1 ATF but it should be OK!
