Next in line on debugging a newly acquired '91 300SE, The transmission doesn't appear to shift into 4th (counting shifts, I assume there is a 4th). Most of the posts refer to flairing or hard shifts. Any help on directions to pursue would be GREATLY appreciated.

I'm not sure if this helps, but you say you are counting shifts, the car starts in second as standard , so maybe you are not couting first gear.
Again, sorry if this doesn't help!

Thanks! I feel really dumb. I assumed the car started in 1. It seems to rev fairly high ~3k at ~70mph I am used to Fords, and this seemed high.
Again thanks for the tip

I have always felt that my 300se runs at high revs at higher speeds, but from what I have read here, and heard from techs, it seems normal.

Maybe it's time I upgraded to a 560, or stole my dads 500!!

Tell us more about your 300SE!!

Oliver

1991 300SE 114K Taupe w/ Beige hides, wood is still in great shape. We looked at quite a few before getting this one. It seemed to be in very good shape. My wife is retiring at the end of the year, and wanted something a little more elegant than the '98 Taurus she was driving.
Car ran a little rough, did a full tune, still rough. Changed motor mounts yesterday. Now she's SMOOOOOOOOOOOTH!

Unfortunately can't steal Dad's Benz cause he drives a beemer instead

Steve - you can get 1st gear out of your 300-SEL by engaging the kick-down switch underneath the accelerator pedal. From a dead stand still or roll-on, quickly depress the accelerator all the way to the floor to engage the kick-down switch. You WILL feel the difference as opposed to starting out in the default 2nd gear.

Regards.

Steve,

Welcome to the Yacht Club! I recently traded an 84 300SD for a 90 300SE and I love it!

In my opinion, it's the best choice of the 126 class. Beautiful styling, combined with the reliability of the 103 workhorse engine. Smooth and quiet. Some would argue it's underpowered, they may be right. However, coming from a diesel, it's a screamer.

Here's wishing you many safe and enjoyable miles and hours of cruising.

I love them!! Me and my dad have owned them on and off since 1990.

Sometimes we have different models, but they will always be Mercedes.
