I have gas fumes in the trunk. There are no leaks to my knowledge. Tank appears to be under pressure based on gas cap removal. A mechanic told me if could be a rollover vent valve that is stuck?? I just went on atrip to the mountains (4000FT) and the mechanic said that the altitude could effect the operation the valve due to it's age. I have a 89 420SEL. Any comments--the fumes are killing me.

Just in case....
I have a 300 E ('86)with a MB gas cap. I found that the fumes were unbearable at times and that the source was the protruding stems in the gas cap (they were out of place). If you check the cap you will see two stems (can't think of another name); they move and get out of joint so to speak. You have to slide them back in place with plyers. It has happened to me several times because of the way that they are inserted (improperly) by the guy at the gas station. Hope it helps Juan |

as I mentioned in email, a new $5 MB gas cap solved my problem (87 420 SEL), although I still get a whiff of gas now and then - which could be residual from the time period when gas fumes permeated the trunk.

It's amazing what a new gas cap will do ($6.50). Fumes are gone. Thanks guys!
