M103 head gasket R&R

I'm considering the purchase of a 92 300TE with what appears to be a blown head gasket (antifreeze in oil). The car has over 250K miles on it and would probably benefit from a top end (though it doesn't use any oil). I've done all the maint on my own 90 300TE until my kids bent the front end. So...the questions...is a head removal and installation an all day long project?...special tools?...tips?...I'm considering taking the head from my 90 300TE (a 983 eng, and use it on the 985 in the 92...will that work?) What do you think?

Sounds like a good buy.

With the exception of needing a 12-pt "torx-type" bit (or triple-square) for the head bolts, it's all nuts and bolts. The challenge may be to lift out the head with the manifolds attached. It's heavy. You'll probably need some type of overhead winch or engine hoist to gingerly lift the head off.

I feel uneasy about budgeting only a day or weekend for the job. There's always other issues (while you're there) as you go along, and the head may need to be skimmed or reconditioned - a step you're likely to omit if you feel rushed.

You'll also need the correct RTV for the upper timing cover seal.
