That's exactly what I plan on doing. So far it looks like it can be done but it will be a tight squeeze. I was told by 2 Mercedes Master techs that I can. We'll see what happens on Monday.

BTW If I have to remove the tranny, then I will rebuild mine while it's off the car. It takes approximately 5-6 hours to remove and reinstall the tranny.

Let us know if you can do it while still in the car and how you come out on the job! Thanks, Rebee

Thumbs up

Lino,
Have you read this thread:
The ultimate DIY - or am I crazy ?
It does not apply to the B2 per say but contains a wealth of tranny info.

That's the first time I saw that thread. I haven't read through it entirely yet. I will tonight.

Thank you

Sorry, it's the seal ring for the B1 (front) piston; I was way out of line there...

Done the job on the car a few X's, not convenient, but doable. The pin (dogbone) for the apply side of the B2 band/piston likes to fall out of the piston, so either use transmission grease to hold it in place on the B2 piston, or leave the valve body off until you insert the piston/dogbone in. You also might be able to use the next size up dogbone to take out any excessive slack in the band (need to check your book for clearance measurements... involves installing the B2 piston and cover, and measuring distance from slack to apply, or distance measured when you push on the band from beneath in your case); you can confirm dogbone size by counting the # of rings at the middle of the dogbone -- next size up has one extra stripe than what your existing one does. I believe there are 6 different sizes; the shortest one has no rings, and the longest has 5.

Bought the last item on my parts list for Monday - Amsoil ATF. I think I'm ready now.

UPDATE!!! Not Good

Well Gentlemen, it turns out that the B2 Piston I have in my car is in excellent condition and is the exact same one (same part number) as the one I bought from the MB dealer the other day. So I reinstalled my old one.

The B2 Band looked like it was fine as well. I dropped the transmission pan and the transmission fluid was burnt, you could smell a horrible odor from it. Also, there was metallic sprinkles in the pan.

Removing the B2 Piston took my mechanic less than 15 minutes and "YES" it can easily be done without removing the transmission. He just used his bare hands to remove and reinstall with no problems. No special tools or fabrication. Just move the transmission to one side and use a small block of wood to hold in place to give you some room to work. He had it all done in about 25 minutes.

I took pictures of the B2 Piston removal, but unfortunately I forgot to put the flash on in the camera settings so the pictures are not good quality. I did manage to take a couple with the flash after I realized. If anyone needs and pics just ask and I'll post the specific ones you require.

Verdict...My transmission is
I need a new transmission. I wasn't going to remove and take it apart to see what is wrong with it today. I just had the car towed home and called it a day. Riding in a tow truck 2 times in one day is enough for me.

Sorry to hear that lino, are you going to attempt the rebuild yourself, go with a shop or just dump her?

Feel free to think it over by the fire with a good whiskey before responding.

tranny trouble

Sorry, to hear the B2 piston was not the problem. If I could give my .02 worth. If you decide to fix the transmission...don't take it to anyone other than a shop that specializes in MBZ transmissions. That is if you don't do the repairs yourself. I learned the hard way. I put confidence in a brand name shop, and I ended up R&Ring that transmission 3 different times. I was in a quandry for over a year with them. Finally, I heard about a MBZ only shop, and contacted them to do the repairs. They dyno test them before they leave the shop, and when I got it back in was like a dream. The original transmission shop ended up refunding my monies, but it didn't pay for all the lost time and other money.

I will definitely not rebuild myself since I don't have any experience. I haven't decided what i want to do yet. I will start thinking about options tomorrow. Today I think I'll just watch some tv to relax.

A nice drink woulds be nice considering I haven't had one in over 6 months.

Thank you so much for your input. I really appreciate it. I'd like to ask you the name of the specialty shop you ended up using.

Thank You

B2 piston

The shop I used was Silver Star they are in Edmond, Ok. Nice people to deal with. I was originally told they only do dealers etc., but I got mine done as an individual. They give you a code before you can start to reinstall it. They want you to do a specified scheme or they won't stand behind your installation. The transmission still works great never had any problems from day one...nice feeling!!
