Rumbling/Vibration on turns
Hi,
I have a problem which only occurs when turning left and accelerating. The car 'grumbles' and there is a resonance throughout the car. It's a bit like driving along a ribbed road. It was not there one day and there suddenly the next day from the off. I took it 'to the shop' (read my Dad's garage) and we had a look, but the engine and gearbox mounts look fine and we couldn't see any problems with the power steering pump or steering box, apart from the PS pump needing a refill every 2,000 miles nowadays and a slightly leaking pipe.. There was also for a minute since the grumbling started a regular 'clacking' like a really noisy valve, but it went away when I turned right and never came back. Is something pump related likely to cause this? As I've obviously gotta fix the leak, anything else I should look at/fix when I'm in there? Is it time to fit that Sportline steering box I've always wanted.. or would a W202 steering box work? Russ P.S. It's a 190E with only 91,000 miles.

Speaking of odd noises...
Whoever will address the thread above, maybe you can attempt to identify a noise coming from my '94 E320 Cabriolet... this was posted last week but no replies:
Noticing a burb, burb burb (rumbling) sound in the left side towards the rear. It only occurs when the car is hot, after a distance of highway driving, upon re-accelerating (like on off-ramps). Seems that the noise is more audible when re-accelerating at "gentle" speeds; it's not particularly obvious when re-accelerating at higher speeds. Have eyeballed the area around the tire & wheel & can't see anything that looks worn or loose. Any ideas on what this might be? |

When I would make a right turn at low speeds I would get a grumbling noise too, that turned out to be idler arm bushings. It sounded as you described, like you were running over rough pavement. When I did a u-turn really fast (left) I would get a loud buzzing noise, that turned out to be the motor and transmission mounts. Check that idler arm for play! good luck!

Parva,
Check your flex discs, if they are ok, then check your half shafts, and then your strut arm bushings in the rear. If not found there, look in the front. MB's are solid and the sound resonates, sometimes it is hard to find. If your busings and all are ok, you could have a defective bearing in the rear and depending on the vehicle it can be a rough job. Good luck!

The front driver's side (right hand drive car) wheel bearing was replaced today, and the rumbling is gone but I need to drive it more than 3 miles to be certain it's cured! An/the idler arm bushing is indeed somewhat worn - there's a bit of play there, so I've order a bushing kit and will fit soon. I also need two short heat-shielded power steering pipes to stop the PS fluid leak.. ordered as well. And brakes. Russ

I have done the idler arm bushings now and it's still there. I think it might be an engine/transmission mount: It is at its worst when the engine is cold and dies significantly when hot - it sounds and feels like you're running over a rumble strip (or kerb on a race track), and comes with only as little as a quarter turn of left lock. It pretty much gets worse the more you accelerate and the sharper you turn, but still only on left turns. I now have new power steering pipes and a new o/s front wheel bearing. Russ

What about your tires? I bet your peeling rubber a lot in that 16V so you could have some bad spots on your tires. ha ha.. Try swapping them around and see if that helps.

Replace you right rear wheel bearing.
When you turn left, the right rear wheel bearing load increases and make the noise you hear. Been there , done that |

While looking at right rear, also check CV joints.

I do go through rears a lot faster than fronts and now have replaced both rears (bought 4 new tyres when I bought the car), fronts are at about 30% remaining. One tyre had a slight flat spot, but I've put the spare on to see if that makes a difference - it didn't. Just had new rear discs last week, didn't make any difference to the prob., would the bearings be removed to do that? I couldn't do it myself as I was busy unfortunately.
