94 530 BMW Thermostat housing leaks
Was wonding if I could pick the collective brain trust to see if anyone can assist me in the remedy to my dilema. I can't seem to get the thermostat housing to stop leaking after replacing the water pump, thermostat and housing. You can only instll thermostat / housing one way and the rubber O-ring was installed properly on the blcok side. Can anyone aid me in this matter.
When I reinstall, as soon as the car gets hot and the thermostat opend, the housing begins to leak. What am I doing wrong?!?! |

Where exactly does it leak, where the housing contacts the engineblock?
Possibly a bad o-ring. It seems to have something to do with heat/expansion. Did you torque the bolts correctly?

Torqueing is probably the problem.
I am just tightening them. I am so afraid of braking them. My buddy next door is a Ford Tech and motor cycle hobbiest. I will get with him sometimes today and use his torque wrench. I suppose I could just tighten after it starts to leak until it quits....But man I sure am afraid I'll break a bolt

The M60 uses a plastic thermostat housing. Whenever we replace a thermostat, the housing gets replaced as well. About 25% leak in the first week if re-used. The other 75% take as much as a month to begin to leak.

The "word" was that you needed to replace the plastic one with metal.
I did and boy was that a mistake. I never could get it to seal. Ultimately after putting a new plastic one and it leaking (may not have torqued it sufficiently) and then putting the metal one on and tightening the $#!t, it still leaked, I finally bought some gasket sheet and fashioned a gasket out of it and so far so good with the plastic one on the car. Its a quick job but what a headache. If it leaks again, she's headed to the shop. I don't have the time to fight this problem right now |
