Ok, how DO you get a 190e starter back in?
Hey guys!
In my infinite stupidity I pulled the starter on my "free" 190e today to replace it. Discovered three things in the process -- one, the starter is fine (this is the stupid part, it sounded OK, but I thought the overrunning clutch was bad), the problem is worn off teeth on the flywheel. Two, a 300e starter won't fit, won't even go in past the steering link. Three, there is a magic trick of some sort to getting the starter back in. It fell right out when I got the wires off (a long story in itself!), but for the life of me I cannot get it back in place! It will go up between the crossmember and drag link either way, but then will not go further. I'm getting old enough I just quit, my arms were shaking. Need to get back to the weights again, it's been six months or more (tendonitis laid me low -- another of the joys of being nearly 50!). Just what is the magic trick? Besides, of course, dropping the drag link, which is my next approach (not that hard, and beats the hell out of lying on the ground juggling a 15 lbs starter at full extension.....). Once I get the starter back in I'll try to get it running by turning the engine to get good starter teeth, then get it to the tranny shop, I'm not up for a flywheel replacement myself at the moment! Thanks a million! Peter
