Arrow S420 W140 window/mirrow switch replacement

Hello,

I am new to this forum so please excuse any mistakes. I am having electrical problems with my mirrors. Everytime I adjust them, I blow the corresponding 20A fuse. It works if I replace the 20A fuse with a 25A fuse, but recently I saw smoke/sparks coming from the side mirrors.
I suspect the mirror switch is at fault and attempted to replace it, but I cannot remove the mirror switch from the center console. The S420 center console is a single piece of wood running from the area above the radio to the area below the shifter. (I've seen posted instructions on center consoles, but they were for two-piece consoles.) I can press the mirror switch downwards thru the wood, but do not have enough space to remove it from the wiring, much less fit/wire the new switch in. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, does anyone know of a good repair manual for the W140 S-class?

Thanks,

OldSClass

Where there's smoke there's fire, don't bother removing switch pack, you need to remove both mirrors and inspect wiring (common fault on w140, wire rubs bare causing short and blows fuse F3-21).
Mirrors are easy to remove, the inside plastic covers on door frame (were the mirror mounts to door) pop of with a plastic wedge, remove retaining screws (three from memory) unplug wire harness and remove mirror.
You can purchase new harness for mirrors from Benz dealers. Good luck.

As far as w140, here's a start;

Manual

The only good manual is a DVD available from MB $180 it covers all 140s from 92 thru 99. Its a little hard to get used to but is has component and wiring diagrams.
In 95 they changed to a one piece, you have to remove the radio,the shifter trim ring, the climate control, and then release a catch on the arm rest end of the panel. The other end is held by two "J" hooks, when you get the panel up in the rear you slide the front down. You will need your radio code since you are pulling it out and you will need the radio removal tools (easier than nail files) for the climate also. I hope you did not break the catches for the window switch, They are attached to the panel and might not be available.
