The thing that confuses me about the situation is this: I know the instrument cluster (IC) and the COMAND unit are linked via CAN (data serial bus). For the most part it makes sense, because for example the radio station can appear in the instrument cluster and many other radio functions (CD and track, the phone number you just dialed, and info from the Nav system such as when to turn, distance until the next turn, etc). But the fuel mileage is a function of a calculation involving the engine control module, which is also linked to the IC via the engine CAN. So I can't figure out, well first I can't remember this being an option in the COMAND unit, just language, which I believe there is "English" English and USA. "English" must throw in a "pip pip cheerio" or "Tally Ho, right turn straight ahead", or takes tea every afternoon or something. Can't figure out how this would affect MPG readings, unless somehow it does go metric or to those weird English pints or something royal like that..........

It's not over. Not cured.
Now that I've had a few days to test drive the language change, the mpg is better on the face of it. The nav is still off. I can see that it lags behind the display map and can accept that as a function of the cd based system not able to keep pace. What I also see quite clearly is that when I follow a saved route, and then deviate from the route; i.e. bypass an exit or turn it has planned, it consistently shows my car following the planned route and tells me to turn after whatever number of feet. I was on the 215 fwy headed west. I had Ontario Mills shopping center as the destination. You could stay on the 215 or exit to the 10 freeway. The next exit on either freeway will get you to this huge center. The system wanted me on the 10, I stayed on the 215. The map showed me on the 10 and told me to take the next exit, which has a completely different name than the 215 exit. That had to be an 1/8 of a mile error. It caught up with me at the exit on the 215. It also has shown me offroad when I'm on. How do you translate this to a technician so they will address the real problem? Is it software or hardware?

Go to the screen that shows the NUMBER of satellites you are receiving and see how many you are getting when this is happening. If it is more than 3 or 4 and the nav doesn't know where you are any closer than that, I'd say it's hardware, bad GPS receiver. I'd also verify this with a test call to the Teleaid response center.
To explain this to the technician so he will understand it, i would say "The Nav system is off by a country mile". I went to training in Ontario, I was at the outlet mall, the same company owns one in Gurnee, IL, called Gurnee Mills, there is a street around that mall in Ontario named after it, Gurnee Mills Dr? Something like that. Now you know why it's called that. Gilly
