300e windshield washer strangeness
Hi,
First I have to say I really enjoy reading this board. OK, I have a 91 300E (new to me,I am still trying to get to know her). Anyway, this eve, the windshield washer light came on on the dash and I was out of fluid. Curiously, when I turned on my headlights, I heard a "buzzing sound". I pulled into a parking lot and opened the hood. The buzzing sound was coming from the empty windshield washer container. OK, I went shopping and filled the washing fluid up. No moe buzzing sound....but now the windshield washing light continues to be lit on the dash. Whats going on? Thanks in advance! Dave |

The washer fluid level has an indicator on the instrument cluster which gets a reading from a sensor that is on the top of the washer fluid reservoir. One suggestion would be to remove the connector and clean it, plug it back in and see if the light goes off. Sometimes it can be as simple as that or even that the sensor might need to be replaced. Check for leaks and I have heard that certain washer fluids can cause the light to come on.

The sensor is basically a magnet glued to a foam float around a plastic tube. As it goes up, it's near a reed switch inside the tube to turn the light out. As it sinks, hopefully with fluid level, the magnet moves away from the switch and the light comes on. The float in my oldie got saturated & sank. I tried drying it out, even in a vacuum oven, but couldne't rejuvinate it. Found another on eBay and it's back in buiness. Pulling the connector from the top of the sensor will turn the light out.
Unless it's leaking to the inside, I doubt the fluid will matter. Maybe different fluids will saturate the float differently???

My car loses washer fluid allt he time. but not through a leak, through evaporation.
see the washer bottle has two hoses going into the top with a metal coil inside. guess what this is getting heat fromt he cooling system to heatt he fluid! I have to refil it every so often. sounds to me like the sensor is not reading right. you may want to remove it and clean it really well. Alon

Washer fluid
I had the oposite problem on my 92. Kept filling up with coolent. Couldn't figure out why I smelled antifreeze everytime I used the washer fluid. Cost me a fortune to fix and wasn't covered under my extended waranty. Not a real good design as far as I'm concerned.
