Tech question?

Removal of Steering Wheel ...
I am unable to break loose the 10mm hex bolt. Should impact wrench be used?

Should be conterclockwise to loosen.

Thanks
Joe

What size breaker are you using? I find a half inch breaker is the way to go. I suppose you Could use an impact gun, but you shouldn't have to.

The 10mm allen bolt is legendary for torque. A good length breaker bar and an assistant holding the steering wheel is adequate. The sound from the bolt the first time it's removed can be terrifying, sounds like the bolt is shearing, but it's normal.

Counterclockwise for removal.

If you can't get enough leverage, pop the top and stick a pipe on the end of it.

Definitely have another person or persons hold the wheel so that it doesn't turn. Do not rely on the anti-theft lock!!!

It WILL come off!!!

Interestingly enough the W126 service manual recommends placing the steering into the locked position to hold the wheel in place when undoing the 10mm allen bolt.

Some people like me are lucky and have no issues when undoing the bolt, a half metre half inch bar was all it took and it came loose.

Placing the steering in the locked position would probably help by relieving the pressure on the locking mechanism by keeping the wheel relatively static and allowing the helper to take the load placed against it.

Matt.

Placing the wheel in the steering lock position wll greatly increase Mercedes profits thru the sale of more ignition cylinders.
