5 speed electronic or 4 speed in my 1996 S320

I always asumed it was the 5 speed but I just read that they did not put the 5 speed in the 320 untill 1997.

I am 90% sure all the S320's had a 5spd auto.

If you see a D and 4 appear on your transmission panel... it is a 5sp
if D-3, it is a 4sp

You most likely have a 722.5 transmission (like the 722.3 tranny but with an over drive-installed on 129/140 cars with the I-6). In the later part of 1996, they started installing the 722.6 (the most recent electronic controled 5 speed tranny) only in v8/v12 cars (if I remember correctly). You are correct about 1997+ cars are equipped with the 722.6 electronic transmission. Hope this helps you out.

You definitely have a 5 speed - all 140 body sixes got the 5 speed from the start of production in 1992 model year, so the shifter won't tell you anything. The only question is whether it's a 722.5 or 722.6. You can ask your dealer to run a VMI on the car and that will tell you for sure.

Not so - the 92-93 300SEs had the 722.502, which was an evolution of the 722.500 in 1990 300SL.

Is the 722.6 a far superior trans over the 722.5 or 722.502? Is the 722.6 electronic while the 722.5 ect. are not? Are they interchangeable?

The 722.6 is a different animal, I like them. They seem to last a long time with very few fluid changes. However they cost twice of what the old 4spds were to rebuild.

The 722.6 is electronic, and rebuilds are expensive. My indie quoted me $3,500 for a rebuild, while the 722.3 and 722.4 runs $1,500.

Nobody talks much about the cost to rebuild a 722.5xx, nor do you hear much about problems with them. I assume they are more like .3 or.4, but with five forward gears, but don't really know. Somebody must know - are the five speed .5s more like the .3s and .4s, or more like the .6s?

the 722.5 is similar to the 722.4 but has an overdrive built into the rear of the transmission.
