94-95 W124: Replacing fresh air filter how-to

If any owners of 94 or 95 W124 cars (wagon, sedan, etc.) are interested, I posted a photo how-to on replacing the fresh air filters. These are two filters located beneath the windshield wiper through which air destined for the cabin is filtered through.

The 1986-1993 cars (pre-facelift) don't have this filter.

Link: :EDIT: removed bad link

Cheers,
Gerry

Thanks Gerry,

Excellent pictures. This post could not have come at a better time for me. Was planning on doing mine next weekend.

How long did it take?

Phil

Took about an hour (first time), perhaps a little longer. I made sure to clean all the trim and such so that everything looked nice and bright as I put it back together.

It helps to park the wiper either vertical or pointing toward the passenger side slightly.

Cheers,
Gerry

Very Nice. I can't believe how dirty your old ones were! What a difference! Is it the same procedure for my 1989 300ce?

No, these filters were present only in 1994 and 1995 model year cars.

Gerry

Hi Gerry, great shots & clear instructions. Thanks.

Perhaps the article should be saved into the D.I.Y. section of the forum?

BTW, how do we 'park the wiper either vertical or pointing toward the passenger side slightly.' ?

I can answer that for you.

Turn the ignition ON, Wiper ON. When the wiper is half way up the window, (or anywhere else, outside of its normal parked position) turn the ignition OFF.

You will than be able to physically move the wiper to whatever position you want.

Does not sound logical, but that's how its done.

Phil

Thanks Phil. Does sound a bit scary to move the wiper 'manually'. Guess it won't mess up the mechanism.

What I do is to turn the ignition on one click (not the engine on) with the key. Activate the wiper and turn turn the ignition off when it is in the desired position. Very easy.

Cheers,
Gerry

Got it now, thanks Phil & Gerry. Thought the original post #8 was a bit strange to say just move the wiper manually, without turning things on. Glad you guys clarfied.

to make the process even quicker, you really don't have to remove all the plastic covering the passenger side of the filter cavity. I changed the filters on my 1995 E420 by just sliding the filters into place, one at a time, from the driver's side.

If you remove all the plastic surrounds [as I did when R&Ring windshield wiper mechanism] it looks like the attached pik. Tab [located lower right] pivots to allow sliding the lower filter out. Upper filter slides down and is then pulled out. Both expensive filters [sold as set] have interlock channels.
