81 240D won't start

About two weeks ago, the car ran great no problems, went to start it up
nothing but heard noise from starter. Removed it, gear bad in it, installed new one but still will not start. Battery is about six months old, plenty fuel in tank changed out glow plugs, nothing. With a meter tested the timer relay, wires to glow plugs seems all right. Changed fuel filters. I am new to diesel engines
so any help would be appricated.

Thanks

have you changed the fuel filters recently? Have you cracked an injector line to see if you are getting fuel to the injector>

The fuel filters have been changed. Using the hand pump, I get fuel out of the secondary filter, the one that looks like an oil filter, when I crack open a line to one of the injector, nothing. Bear with me, I am new to diesel so the concept of the hand pump blows me away. Am I doing it right?

thanks

It has 225,000 miles on it. The valves were adjusted about 2 years ago. This was my parents car and it sat for about ten months until I received it.
