Transmission Whine
I'm looking for some general feedback on Transmission whine. Any insight or thoughts are welcome.
I seem to have noticed a more apparent whine on the forward gears than before. The whine that's similar to the reverse sound. Not as loud or high pitched but definitely apparent to my ears. An aside: In a previous thread, I've asked about the ATF level. I know the procedure (though the whole temp thing is still perplexing - even had an infrared temp scope to measure the oil temp on the dipstick to correspond with the level - STILL iffy to me if I have the correct level). I'm pretty sure the AT was overfilled by a large margin at one point, but there were never any shift problems. So if you have any personal experiences, stories, or any technical insight on Transmission whine, I'd appreciate it. Some topics that comes to mind: Noise to: transmission wear ATF level Normal? (to a degree) Shift quality vs. noise? ATF type? Driveline Etc. Anything else that comes to mind. Last edited by 96C280; 03-26-2004 at 05:35 PM. |

When was the last trans fluid & filter service? MANY times the trans filter media comes apart & sticks into the pick-up port of the valve body. I would start there!

The transmission service (filter and fluid) was done about 1 year and 10,000 miles ago. Is this applicable to what you're saying, or only if the ATF filter was old?
I'm trying to note the noise on a regular basis and yesterday, for whatever reason, the transmission sounded relatively quiet. This was when the transmission was still cold just like when it does seem to whine. Does transmission noise vary a lot with respect to outside temps? Last edited by 96C280; 03-26-2004 at 05:45 PM. |

Transmissions whine 101
A whine in park or neutral that increases with RPM could be a plugged filer or a worn oil pump. If you hear the whine when shifting from neutral to drive and back at a stop it Could be a bad torque converter turbine. A planetary whine will change pitch or disappears when the transmission shifts .a planetary whine will also disappears in direct drive 1:1 ratio;4th gear in your car. If the transmission makes a whine in all forward gears you have a major problem or it is not transmission related. An engine thrusts bearing failure will make a similar whine. You can isolate the transmission by disconnecting the torque converter from the flywheel. If the whine disappears it is Trans if not engine |

Our old 626 has had a bad converter for nearly two years, whines when pulled out of park, and is still holding on. Go figure, eh? That was why we "replaced" the car.

Update:
The whine is still present more or less. It occurs in all gears and at just below 2000 rpms to about 2300 rpms. Then "disappears" in the higher revs. Does this provide any clues? The trans seems to shift as well as before. No deterioration that I can tell but the whine can be annoying and disconcerting although I know it's been a year and about 13,000 miles since I posted the original message |
