Question Blower upgrade for W124?

I've had my 95 E300 for 5 years and have always been surprised how weak the blower is. It works and has 4 or 5 speed settings but compared to other cars its really feeble. I have replaced the dust filter and recently had the dash out and checked everything was clean in the heater box.

Is feeble performance normal ? if not is there an upgrade/ or other fix available.

I have read posts on W210 on this subject but dont know if it applies to W124s.

Any experience/advice?

acc-blower

Hi Ican not see a problem with the motor, should put out more than enough,i would suspect the blower regulator try jumping out the blower temp and se if you get a better output.joeym PS i assume the vents arein working order cause that will cut down on the flow

Shortly after I bought our 1995 E420 in 2000 I complained to the dealer about the same problem. I had a W124 before and knew how much air the blower should produce. They kept insisting everything was fine and I finally asked to talk to the Mercedes zone rep. He sat in the car with me for 5 seconds and agreed that the air flow was way too weak. He scheduled another service appointment and this time they found that the blower fan had been replaced but it was somehow installed backwards! It is my understanding that this is easy to do because I have seen warnings about it. Is it possible that is your problem? Your 1995 Mercedes should produce plenty of air flow if things are working properly.

blower in backwards

Bob
thats a completely new idea to me (what a great forum we have here) Just after i got the motor I employed a tech who didnt know his left from right, he installed a duo valve and mixed up all the pipes for example (so i fired him and decided to do all non engine stuff myself but not before he put a blower motor in for me) . Its quite possible he would have installed the blower wrongly. However I am surprised knowing MB that the design would allow it.

do you mean physically in the wrong way or electrically connected backwards?

is there anyway to check without pulling out the motor?

this is an interesting suggestion many thanks for your post

124 blower upgrade

I just replaced the blower motor on my 95 E320, so I assume you have the same one.

The motor can be installed backwards or, if the motor was replaced at some point and the same "fan cages" were used, they could have been installed backwards.

Can't think of anyway to physically check it without taking off the cover which requires taking off a bunch of other stuff...the motor is located underneath the windshield wiper.

"The blower regulator permits a continuous blower speed regulation. The blower regulator is connected to the main fuse box and ground and is supplied with battery voltage as soon as the ignition has been switched on. In addition, the blower regulator is connected to the automatic climate control unit by means of a control cable. Depending on the function selection of the blower switch, the control unit continuously sends a control voltage of between 0.4 to 9 volt to the blower regulator. The regulator continuously supplies a current between 2.0 to 28 amps to the blower motor, in this way regulating the blower speed."

Unfortunately the blower motor regulator is also located under the motor cover, so no way to check it without taking off the cover.

you guys rock!!

ahobgood and Bob I .....you guys rock

I opened it all up turned around the fan cages put back together and ...... air to blow your hair off

I am really glad to have cured this (with help from you both) but also mad at the half brained Tech who installed the new fan 3 years ago since when I have been on reduced air. He also mixed up the connections on my duo valve which I also had to sort out. There's a lesson here.. if you want it done properly ..do it yourself.

anyhow thanks again both
