Question Loosing reverse

My wifes 1990 300E is loosing reverse. The trans work great in Drive . But is slipping in reverse and will kinda knocks/chatters when it finaly starts to move in reverse. The car has 190,000 miles on it with out many flaws.
Any Ideas? I have check the fluid level. It is ok. Before I notice the slippage, I change the Flex disk thinking that was the chatter, old one was shot.

reverse

before the no reverse, was there a slow reverse, meaning it took longer to go into reverse than in to drive?

Hopefully this won't come as a shock to you, but at 190k and with the symptoms you describe, I would bet that an overhaul is in your very near future...

miles

is that original miles on the transmission? if so i agree with 400E. i had a slow reverse in my 300se, replaced the reverse soft discs and added a thicker hard disc, thei removed the slack repairing the slow reverse, what i was getting at was, what happened to yours sounds exactly like what happens if you let the slow reverse go un repaired, there are some parts and plates and such that will eventually bend and break. see picture #119 will bend and the springs may come loose, and #107 may also crack and the alignment lug will break and the whole unit may spin or rotate causing more damage internally.
