Yesterday I walked out to my Fiancee's 86 560sl. She had just filled this hungry car with gas. You could tell there was spillage near the gas tank opening. And you could smell it. I looked inside where the cap is and saw that she hadn't put the cap on very well..it was pretty much just laying there. This would explain why there was gas that had spilled just under the cap and onto the paint on its journey to the concrete below. The next day the interior cab of the car smells like gas. Is this something I should worry about? Or do you think that this is just from the slopping around of the gas without a cap on the tank?
Thanks for your help!

The rubber boot around the filler neck is supposed to keep fuel from entering the trunk area. If it's original then fuel probably made it into the trunk. Very easy to replace, not easy to rid trunk of fuel smell.

Fuel tank filler neck grommet (# 123 997 35 81). Part is cheap and very simple to install.
