Hi, I have a 1986 560sl, the problem is that the car has developed a very strong gas odor and nobody can figure it out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Drew

All R107 SL's have had this type of problem since early times! There is an expansion tank for fuel vapors mounted above the fuel tank. The early ones were plastic & later steel. All of them leak!!

I have an 83' 500sl. I had a leak where the fuel line connects to the fuel pump. I replaced the copper seals and that corrected the problem. A couple of days later I filled the fuel tank for the first time. The next day I noticed a strong gas smell in the car. I then found gasoline on the floor in the garage very near the location that the leak in the fuel line caused. Upon inspection, I found the gas to be coming through the rubber grommet that the electric connections for the fuel pump pass thru. Would this be consistant with the expansion tank leak?
