Prolong Super lube

Do you recommend adding a bottle of Slick 50 or Prolong with an oil change?

Doesn't hurt anything but your wallet. Frequent oil changes w/correct weight oil does the same thing.

Friends in the engine development departments with Detroit auto companies. Both have heard of every additive on the market.

They both recommend the same additives that their companies recommend - NONE! They simply have never been proven to be needed.

We are in the same BMW motorcycle club. Nobody uses such additives in their motorcycles. These engines thrive at 6,000 - 8,000 rpm at cruising speed all day, can produce 100 hp/liter or better and will go 200,000 miles without a rebuild given regular service.

Long-winded way to say I wouldn't recommend it either.

A long time ago I rebuilt a motor that the owner regularly used STP oil treatment...what a mess! After steam cleaning and caustic bath I needed a hammer and chisel to clean it out.

Prolong has been directed by the federal government to stop making false claims about their product extending engine life. Sad but true. If it were any good, you know that the mongo large oil companies would have already incorporated it into their oil.

About a decade ago BMW-AG put out a study covering several products, including Slick 50. Apparently Slick 50's "active" ingredient - Teflon (PFTE)- was found to degrade when exposed to temperatures present on gasoline engine cylinder walls. The principle degradation product? HYDROFLUORIC ACID, which adversely affected internal engine components; BMW reported measurable deterioration of iron-based piston rings.

BTW, I found the MercedesShop website (and forum), by doing a search for info on Lubro Moly after my mechanic outlined it as part of his recommended 15K interval service for mein Benz.

So, on the other hand, you might want to check out the additives that are sold on the parts shop, like Lubro Moly MotorProtect. I would also like to see any comments from members who have tried Lubro Moly products, and what their experiences were.
