A/C Question

Hi-I have a 1985 300D Turbo. I notice my ac belt had broken. I tried turning the ac compressor by hand and could not turn it. Does that indicate that the compressor locked up or is the clutch bad? The ac worked fine the last time I used it last summer.
Thanks in Advance.

This is about the worse thing that can happen to your ac. When the compressor locks up like that it is due to internal, catastrophic failure.

Don't even DREAM about simply replacing the compressor and being done with it. That will result in almost immediate failure of the new compressor. Remove the compressor and FLUSH EVERYTHING in the a/c system. FLUSH, FLUSH and FLUSH again. When the compressor fails like that bits of debris are strewn THROUGHOUT the entire system.

After THOROUGH flushing, replace the receiver/dryer, add 6 oz. of mineral oil, evacuate and charge with R12. If the system has been previously converted to another refrigerant this would be the perfect time to take advantage of the fact that R12 prices are falling like a rock.

Good luck,

From the info you posted it looks as if your compressor has locked up for some reason and snapped the belt. Not the thing you want to hear, but: Likely it's new compressor time. I'd stay away from the "All Season" rebuilt ones, too... Doing the job ONCE is bad enuff, having to do it twice due to failure of a "reman" unit is HATEFUL. And flush the system WELL! I say this from a point of multiple experiences with reman compressors from those fellas. :-{
