does any one know what the hydralic tank is for on this 300td wagon. very new at owning a merdedes

Your rear suspension is a hydraulic setup. Do a couple of searches on hydraulic suspension and you shall be informed. I recommend using only Mercedes or Febi hydraulic fluid and since the car is new to you it's probably time for a hydraulic filter change and fluid flush.
