Diesel Volvos suspect

Check around on this Volvo site.

http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/?model=200

Go to the 700/900 section and do a search on "diesel". As I recall, the Violvo diesel is generally not recommended. However, the body and extras which come with the diesel are good and the car would make a good candidate for a V-8 conversion.

It's a 6 cylinder motor of VW design with a rotory injection pump driven of the back of the cam.

They do make some good power if you nail shut the waste valve.
The engine was a commercial power plant in Europe for light trucks and buses.

Problems are....cam belt/pump timing is difficult to get right. . .but doable.
Often crack flex plates.
Alt' is rubber mounted and ground problems happen.

Apart from that, they are as good as any MB in the engine department.

I've serviced them for years......as good a Volvo as you'll find that old.

I used to sell a lot of new Volvo parts back when I managed a parts store.
The diesel Volvo, with proper care, is a reliable motor.
With it's aluminum head even slight overheating can lead to a cracked/warped head, keeping engine cool goes a long way.

It doesn't take abuse like a old B20 4cyl Volvo engine.

People love them or hate them.

I would find a shop that has worked with these cars. A good tech will make ownership a joy. A parts changer will make you wish you never heard of a diesel Volvo.

Good luck.

Volvo 760

That car is perfect for a SB Chevy/turbohydromatic package drop-in. There are complete' kits' of everything but the engine/tranny available, and a good engine/tranny package should be easy and cheap to find--millions made.

Actually, the small block Ford and AOD fits better.

The Ford SB v8 is longer and narrower than the SB Chevy, and significantly lighter, too -- ideally matched to the Volvo diesel front springs and the space available.
