Sorry for the double post on tranny but I need some help ASAP.
I emptied the converter and next was the tranny drain plug but it #@%^$*&% stripped. The black paint covering the pan was continuous to the oil plug meaning you could not see the seperetion between the plug and the pan. I am assuming when the replaced the tranny oil before, they just took the whole pan out and not the drain plug (this is the first time I am doing the tranny oil since I got the car). Here is the question: If I unbolt the the tranny pan out, how much oil is there? I am in for a tranny fluid bath? I am assuming that it pan can hold about 3 liters (enough for the whole oil minus the one in the converter), is this correct? Please any input would be nice, thanks ACM |

It's not that much, as quite a bit gets retained in all the passages. Just get a large oil catch pan and go for it. Even fluid coming out the drain plug is messy. You probably already have the car jacked up so loosen the rear pan bolts more than the front.
Have fun. Steve |

You could use a tube inserted into the fill/measuring pipe to suction out the fluid held in the trans pan. It reduces the total amount of trans fluid considerably.
The torque converter still has to be drained, but this is the way I usually do it, before pulling the pan to change the filter. Haasman

I think there may be two to 2 1/2 quarts in the pan.... I would get a box that is bigger than the pan...and line it with a plastic trash bag.....
the tough part is balance in the pan with one hand while undoing the bolts.. best if you have another set of hands there.

Thanks people.
This is exaclty what I did. A larger pan and untied few bolts of the tranny oil pan. Few minute later I was able to detach the whole pan. My estimate is that there were about 2 to 2.5 liters of oil in the tranny pan. I did not bother with the stripped drain plug since I can change the fluid this way. I believe that the drain plug was never opened (black paint was not cracked). They must have been take the whole pan out directly every single time. thanks ACM |
