Tdc On M103 Head???
I have the bottom half at TDC but am unsure even after numerous posts on how to set the head to TDC I am not sure which marks the forum is refering two. Any real pictures would be awesome. Thanks for all your help.

tdc
tdc uptop on the m103 engine is right behind the came timing gear
you will see a notch that matches the notch on the head this is not it. repeat this is not it and it suckered me for a long time.... there is what looks like a small drilled hole and you line that up with the notch on the head. |

ok
well, i dont know what to say....
but when i lined my two notches up like the photo i was way off and mine did not come into time until i lined up the notch on the head with the drilled hole looking thing.... there is a notch on the top of the sprocket and a notch on the bottom.... so we did not use the notches and it runs perfectly... but i would go with the photo.... sorry |

Okay, that is what I thought and there are two notches on the cam gear and I had this and number six valve is extended. On the bottom end # 6 piston is extended all the way up when #1 cyclinder is TDC. Since there are two notches on the cam gear which one is correct???? This is my dilemma and I do not want to put it back improperly. THank you for all your help.

My (modified) camshaft does not have a notch like #22 in the photo. Instead it has a small drilled hole which I lined up with #517 in the picture. My car is perfectly in time. After you think you've set the timing correctly rotate the engine TWICE by hand using a 27mm sprocket on the crank pulley at the front of the engine to ensure no valve-to-piston contact.

On my camshaft I have two notches similar to the one pictured. I also have a small spot on the camshaft that appears to have a tiny indentation like a small drill mark. Is this TDC??? I think it is since the other valves in this position 1&6 piston are fully extended and the valves are in the closed position. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Yes, that is the same mark I used for TDC, a small drill hole.

thanks guys i was starting to feel like an idiot...
i used the small drilled hole and its in time... here is the way you can check... on your crank there is a metal slot that will stick straight up...stick something in your #1 spark plug hole and watch it move up and down until you get the top.. then rotate your cam shaft until the rocker arm is loose... that means both valves are closed. and you will find that there is a small drilled hole that lines up with the notch..... then put it back together and you will see that the timing mark will be on zero where the sensor is.... and when you put the rotor back on it will align with the #1 spark plug conector on the distributor.... |
