Advice Needed!!!
xxxxxx
OK-1988 Isuzu Trooper I want to buy-lovely-BUT,...it seems when it's started, it's wanting , but not getting fuel, and shortly dies out.EVERYTHING else works great/strong-we actually got it out on the road for a short spell-just seemed like it ran out of gas? New engine put in 3 years ago- an airforce pilot owner- well taken care of- but didn't spend much time in the driver seat, going "over-there" and all,[ low miles on the newbie engine also.] Really want to take it off his hands for a REALLY reasonable price- SO- a fuel pump, do you think??? AND, how hard is that to do- any advice???- breathlessly waiting- |

IIRC, in 1988, the Trooper only came with the 2.6L I4 engine and had a carburetor. Any fuel issues would be enough to scare me off. Them Mikuni carbs are real spendy.

not to overlook the obvious but....
I had a 1987 Trooper II and it seemed like I was always replacing the fuel filter. (just a thought)

I know Holly used to make replacements for several of the different Mikuni's.And they were slightly less then an origional rebuilt carb.I would try flow testing the fuel pump to see if it's the problem. If it is the pump?Sure,go ahead if you want the Trooper.Never actually changed a pump on that engine myself. But I've worked with a few of the automotive Mikuni carbs. And their both spendy and a pain with their many linkages, hoses, you name it.

sounds like
fuel filter to me too.
the beauty of carbs is that it is usually pretty easy to adapt another more easily maintained type, such as a weber or holley. do you have to go through emission inspections where you are? if not an older non emissions carb would be much easier to keep running, off road only of course. also, didn t those troopers come with diesels too? tom w

Curious minds want to know...
Why would you join a technical Forum on Mercedes Benz automobiles just to ask a question about an Isuzu Trooper?
You might have more luck on an Isuzu site...

Try www.planetisuzoo.com as it's a great source of info. As for the '88 Trooper, they were all fuel injected 2.6L fours and quite reliable. There is a Weber carburetor kit available for less than $300 if you want to convert, so take a close look to see if maybe that had been done by the prior owner. Typically the Isuzu injection setup is nearly bulletproof. The fuel pump is accessible from the top of the fuel tank, which is fairly easy to service but you'll first need to remove the armored cover before dropping the tank. Do try changing the fuel filter first as it's cheap and easy to do. One of the greatest things about working on Troopers is that you can crawl right under them and get to just about everything, especially on the 2.6 models.
