Another Tumbler Removal Question

Car: 89 260E W124

Read numerous articles in archive. My self made 2mm thick tool will not get inside the two slots. The barrel sleeve is blocking the way. I know I need the 2mm thickness to release the tumbler. Pls. help, it is driving me nuts!!

You mean the 2mm wire won't fit in the holes?

I had good luck with a single strand of 12 guage copper wire extracted from Romex household electric wire. I used the unsheathed ground wire.

It was a very tight fit, but it worked. BTW, the 14 guage was too narrow.

copper hanger wire has served me well..be sure to cut the end @ a 45 degree angle.

You can easily remove the face plate surrounding the ignition lock. The black face plate between steering column and center of dash is a compression fit. Use thin blade (knief, screw ddriver) and pry it out. You can also start at the felt gasket above the steering column. Pull it out a little and insert tool.
