I noticed that inside the headlight there is a vacuum system that is used to aim the headlights. My question is: Is there a way to aim the headlights other than hooking them up to a vacuum source? Thanks.

I was afraid of this. I have forgotten about making you a wiring diagram from my car with Euro lights. Do you still need it?

If you can find one, there is a vacuum switch that you can put in the dash that gives you four positions for your headlights. You will need a vacuum source to the switch and then some vacuum lines from the switch to the lights. I have this on my Euro 240D. For me it is an excellent thing to have. I drive 20 miles on winding, hilly, narrow farm roads to get to the highway. I use the switch to raise the lights on the farm road because there is no traffic. I then lower the lights a couple of notches when I get to the highway and the traffic.

You might do some research and find the part number of the vacuum switch.

Larry, I don't need the wiring diagram anymore. Thanks though! To get the lights to work, I had to take apart the old light housing and do some minor wire butchering, using the connector from the stock US headlights to power the Euro lights. Thank God that the sealed beam 6054 unit uses the same connector as the European H4 bulb. Fog lights are H3 in both units, so that wasn't a problem. How did you go about with the wiring for your 240D?

I'm glad you got it done. I simply took apart the connector that plugs onto the headlight unit, and moved the pins around. I had to use an ohmmeter and figure out which wire went in which location. That was the trouble I was trying to save you. I'm sorry I wasn't much help.

When there is a vacuum leak in the headlight adjusting system of a european mercedes, the lights will drop as low as possible. The head light will be aimed just in front of the bumper and with a vacuum leak in the auto-adjusting system it is not possible to aim them any higher without turning the knobs completely out (and the lights will still be aimed too low).
Just out of curiosity: are there americans with auto-adjustable european head light units without connected vacuum suplyance and with a very well aimed head light unit?? That is something impossible as far as I know...You have to connect the vacuum system in these headlights in order to get good visibility...
