On my 86 300E the hood release is below the parking brake release and redish in color and the gas flap is open when all doors are unlocked and locked when doors are locked.

The hood release lever is next to the driver's left knee, under the dash.

As stated, the fuel door is unlocked when the interior doors are unlocked. Just push the door on the front side and it will lever upwards. If you need to manually open the gas door, say if the battery died which would disable the vaccum lock system, then you have to open the trunk, pull back the plastic wall on the gas door side of the trunk and there is a manual catch for the gas door.
