I recently posted a question on this topic and several of you responded that a service pack was released by MB for the 722.6 transmission. I called my dealer and he has no knowledge of any service bulletins. I also called the MBUSA 800 number and they said nothing has been released. Yet more than one person has said they got it. Can you help me by providing specific information so I can help the dealer find it? Is MBUSA not giving me the right info?

I have heard of the upgrade to the '97's, but not the later cars. If you figure it out, please let me know as well. I use this site as a learning tool and a hobby.

Finally got the answer!
It's true. MB issued an updated Transmission Control Module including updated software for the 98 CLK (perhaps others too..but I didn't ask the details). My dealer found this out from the district tech rep.
I had mine installed under warranty. Upshifts are smoother and downshifts are easier to initiate.

Would my 1997 E420 manufactured in September 1997 (end of production year) need to be checked for a transmission upgrade? I just bought the car used with 25000 miles, so I don't have much of a frame of reference.
It does hesitate a bit before downshifting, but I thought I read somewhere that it was normal for this car. |

How about '99 cars?
is there an updated software for the transmission for it as well? |

Benzmac - Can you help?
I'm sorry but I don't know how many MB models and which model years can benefit from this upgrade. I would press your dealer for an answer. Benzmac...can you find out?

Well - I called MBUSA.
They told me I needed to bring the car to the dealer and were not aware of any issues with the 1997 automatic transmission. . . I drive a 97 e420 produced 9/97 with 27000 miles that will go out of warranty this October. My experience with dealers is that they seek to deny the existence of any problems - so I was hoping to point them to the upgraded transmission package - no luck. Any additional guidance before I bring my car in would be appreciated. Also, I live in Austin, Texas. If anyone has had good luck on this issue with any dealers in Texas (i.e. know and are willing to acknowledge a problem) let me know, please. |

To APB
Here's my suggestion. Take your car to the dealer and complain about the lag in downshifting. Tell them that a friend of yours with a 98 CLK had the Transmission Control Unit replaced for a similar problem...and ask if it is the same unit. I know that 98 E-classes and CLK classes share the transmission, but I'm not sure about the '97 (I know the engine changed to V-6 in 98). My dealer really didn't argue about it at all.
