I have a 92 190e 2.6. The engine seems to overheat when the car is not moving like at a stop light. The temperature is normal when the car is in motion. Also, when I rev up the engine for about 10-15 seconds when the car is parked, the temp indicator comes down fast to normal position. I took it to a mechanic and he replaced the fan clutch. Unfortunately the new clutch didn't help either. I was wondering if someone else had similar problems??? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

You got it. I suffered with the frustration of this problem also. The temperature would rapidly shoot up when in traffic and would be fine when you were moving. I thought it could not be the thermostat because it was ok at speed but I was wrong. The thermostat would open just a crack and must have been forced open by the water pump circulation at higher speeds. I removed the thermostat and checked it in boiling water to confirm it would only open a crack. To make a long story short the thermostat takes about 3 minutes to replace and costs about $25.

Maybe the auxillery coolant pump. Mine went bad at 125K
It's on the right side of the car. My temp would rise while stopped before fan clutch went on. First noticed temp rise when stopped at drive thru window. I believe your car has one also.(pump) Gary |

WELCOME TO THE FORUM!
When you say overheat, how high is the temp getting in degrees on the gauge? |

Thanks Ali. The temp indicator goes just past 3/4 mark, but doesn't get to the red mark.
Thanks glmoy. This model (190e 2.6 -1992) has only one water pump. Thanks JDUB, I will replace the thermostat this weekend and let you know what happens. |

One other thing you should check, if you haven't done so already. The coolant level. BTW, the thermostat opens against the flow from the block not away from it. Make sure you have adequate circulation thru the radiator.
