I am going to Stuttgart for a week in early April. I want to try again to get a set of Euro lights for the 124 car.
My question is, will my US turn signal lights fit on the Euro headlight assemblies? When I was at a salvage yard in Hamburg last fall, they showed me the turn signals and they looked just like mine. I didn't have cash, and it was Saturday morning. I was trying to get cash and get back before the closed but didn't make it. Had I gotten the cash, I was going to buy only the headlights, and the vacuum switch and trim plate on the dash. Would that have been a mistake? Thanks for your help, |

Hi Larry:
On my '87 300E, the turn signals fit on the car seperately from the headlights, and in fact have to be removed from the body (by squeezing the tab at the rear)in order to get to the headlights. I bought used Euro lights off a grey market car, no turn signals included, and they work perfectly with my stock indicators. Are you going to try to find 500E Euro lights to get the pencil beam driving light, or stick to 300E Euros. If you don't need fogs and do country driving, I would think the fog light wiring and switch could be used to control the driving light, which uses the same 55W H3 bulb as the fog unit. The switch and wire don't care about the reflector/lens design. Good luck, and while you are in Germany, pick up some Philips Vision Plus H4 bulbs - same wattage as the stock, but a claimed 50% more light on the road from a more usable beam pattern! They aren't available in the US yet - just the "premium" plus 30% Philips. [Edited by JCE on 03-02-2001 at 11:20 AM]

What I plan on doing is just getting a set at the salvage yard. They are cheap and I doubt that I could find the 500E ones very easy.
Thanks alot for the response, |

The vision bulbs are available from http://www.Fosmo.com
Larry, the turn signals are interchangeable between US and Euro lights. The only difference is the harness to the lights because the US lights have to come on when the headlights are on. It makes you wonder why they didn't give the US those lights to start with Make sure the euros you pick up have the clips for detaching the lens! Take care. |

dtanesq,
I would like to get a second set for you, but I'm planning on boxing them and checking them as baggage. I will get contact information for you if I find a good source, so you can buy them and have them shipped to you. Have a nice weekend, |

Larry,
If you (by any chance) get lost in Germany and see a sign that says "Nederland", feel free to come by!!! My wonderful boss is stalling my departure to the states again (which is pretty convenient because I haven't finished my 300CE conv. yet), so I will probably be still around the first weeks of april. yal, All european euro lights have the detachable lenses! JCE, The 500E is a rarity in europe and searching for used lights on salvage yards is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Fast cars that get totaled in accidents ALWAYS are totaled in front and NEVER in the rear... greetingz,

Euro?
What does the US headlight modell look like and whats the disadvantage of that one ?
I have changed the standard H4 55w/60w to a H4 80w/100w works great. I have used the more powerful H4´s in about 2 years. Pelle Euro 300E 4M -89 |

Take a look at my site, up until 1993 that was the American light. The beam pattern is not great, and visibility is not that good either.
The Fog light lens cover is plastic. The European headlights provide a superior beam pattern and reflector. They also look better, and make the car look more up to date. The changeable lenses are also a huge plus. In 1994 they changed it to a more european spec light, but it still does not have the same look as the Euro's and they do not work on older cars because the lens is different to accomodate the updated hood and grill design. So in order to really use those lights, you have to change the hood. Updating to the European lights is for better visibility, beam pattern, light design, better reflector, and looks. The vacuum adjustment on some euro lights is a plus. And the city lights look really cool too. The improved light output because of the better reflector is what we all look for. Alon

MBenz,
This trip, I will be in Stuttgart for the entire week. If I make it back in the summer, I will probably be all over the place. When I go to Holland it will be Eindhoven. What part of Holland are you in? Have a great day, |
