The top in an '01 CLK430 I just got doesn't work and the control switch is continuously illuminated. Can the soft-top control module be diagnosed through the under hood 38 pin diagnostic connector? Can the AST Retriever pull the codes or do I have to take it to the dealer?

Soft top (vario roof) can be diagnosed thru the 38 pin connector ONLY..

Yes, a retriever should have that ability. That is part of the interior network.
