i prob

would substitute "fine driving cars" for "fine cars" since in my book a fine car has a connotation of quality.

Whew! Ain't THAT the truth!

I could have paid for mine with what I spent on repairs!

Beautiful car though!

No they are pretty well built cars. The interiors are nicer then MB's, more wood, more inviting. The enginering and design just are not their. Take a 1998 XJ8 for example and compare it side by side with an S420 of the similer year. The MB is in another class in terms of design, enginering, and the driveline is better.

The Jag V8 is a sweet engine, puts out about 300hp and sings to redline. Really a honey of a motor. But the upper timing chains snap, they lose compression. (at least up to 2000my)

All British cars break a lot. Look at Rolls Royce, you can buy one for $20k and put another $20k into it in a blink of an eye.

I'd still buy a Jag though, they are sweet cars.

You and I are going to disagree on Rolls - Royce / Bentley quality...
I know many that have been taken care of correctly, and have 300,000 + miles.

You are speaking to the ultimate LUXURY car in the world = if maintenance is not kept up, the cost to put a sub standard vehicle back upon the road is high = it is not a Chevy or Ford, we are speaking of Rolls - Royce / Bentley.

There is NOTHING like driving a properly functioning Rolls - Royce / Bentley, and there is a special thrill in knowing it is "recognized" from Harlem to Moscow, and Australia to Cambodia.

I work on them, and write technical articles for the "Modern Lady" RROC publication.

Do not ever pass up the chance to drive or ride in the new Phantom or Bentley, it defines sinful automotive luxury for the rest of the world.

What Roy I think we are on the same page. I am a RR/Bentley fan as well. My point is maintaince costs have no relationship to build quality.

A properly sorted Jag is a joy to drive, and so is a sorted Royce, and MB.

I fully intend on having a Bentley sitting next to the MB one day.

Due to the odor of gas in your oil, I agree with the others that the fuel pressure regulator may be dumping raw fuel into the crankcase. But, because the fuel is also a petroleum product I don't think that will cause the oil to look like cappucino. That is probably caused by a bed head gasket.

I know some Jag engines have head bolts that pass through the water jacket, don't remember which years, or engine type though. Please do post back to let us know what it turned out to be. Inquiring minds want to know.

I just purchased a 01 XJR and sold my 94 E320. I must say the Jaguar is definitly more sexy, has a much more inviting interior, and imho more fun to drive as well. With that being said, I believe that the structure or quality of materials in Benz are superior. I had 241k miles on the clock when I sold her and she was as tight a structure as when I purchased her. The materials held up VERY well but I had to spend quit a bit on her too. The likes of all M104, head gasket, timing cover gasket, wiring harness, throttle body actuator, heater blower motor, flex disks, motor mounts, brakes etc. She defintly wasnt the cheapest car to own but it was a pleasure to drive! I just cant see with all that I have poured into her that the Jag will be any more expensive to own. Just my 2 cents.

glad you are happy. i hope you will check back in a few years and let us know if you still feel that way.

i think the older xk model coupe is pretty excellent looking.

and the xk e coupe is one of the best looking cars ever at any price.

Very sad that I was forced to pass up a one owner 1962 Silver Cloud for $15,000.00 USD in November.
It was a mid level driver/show car driven 22,000 miles per year.
Perfect service records + body restored in 2004.

The XJR's are sweet cars, and good call buying a 2000 plus one as well. Their was an 02 XJ8 VDP on ebay I was watching, buy it now only $19k. These things drop in value like a rock.

I was warned to stay away from Jags with the Brembo brake option. Discs are about $350 each and pads will run you about $300 last I checked. Although inline with a brake job on an E55.

I have had Jaguars in my family of cars and enjoyed them tremendously. A Jaguar MkVII Sedan and 3.8 MkII Sedan. But like the old saying of owning a Big Cat; You know you are going to get scratched and bitten on occaission, that is not the question. The question is "How much are you going to BLEED!"

Also been involved with Rolls-Royce Motorcars. After you have experianced the Drama and Presence of a Rolls-Royce, there is no feeling like it in Driving. It's unique and there is nothing else like it. I think it's too overwhelming to be a daily experience. I know this sounds very pompous, but those who know it, will agree.

Each car has it's own personna. A Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar, are unique in their own special way, not better, but special.

WHunter, I have sent you an email about the RROC.

Very busy (understatement), will try to respond ASAP.
Took the liberty of forwarding it to RROC MR webmaster, for their attention, they may want to do an article.
Have a great day.

My uncle had a 1984 Jaguar XJ-6 that he bought nearly new (perhaps 3-4 years old). The engine was so bad, that the original owner had already put in a Corvette engine (out of a wrecked late model). It ran flawlessly after that. I drove the car before and WOW - what a ride. The ride was superb and the handing was simply amazing. Classy cars to say the least.

I don't know why people hacked GM engines into them. I grew up riding around in my Grandma's 1986 XJ6, it was red she bought it new, traded a 79 XJ12 on it(think 79).

Had that thing for a long time, always ran good everything else broke.

If I recall, the engines had poor electricals (so I am told anyway). I think that a Chevrolet 350 V8 was the easiest engine to swap in and those engines are virtually bulletproof. Thats the only thing I can think of. I have seen SEVERAL Jags with Chevrolet 350 engines. Usually the ones with the original engine have already burned up because of a fuel leak or something shorting out. You see a lot of Jaguars with engine fires, but mostly its the later models.
