Exclamation Hood emblem thief worries

I have a 1981 300 SD and was wondering if anyone has ever taken out their hood emblem? Reason I ask is that I plan to use this as a daily driver and i want a "security feature" if you will to prevent people from stealing my 3 pointed star. If anyone was any advice that would be great!!

There are removeable hood stars out there. If that doesn't appeal, I've seen a flat badge replacement.

Check with Phil at FastLane -- he can probably get you one.

I bought a removable tri-star several years back and never installed it. If I can find it I'll sell it to you for $5 to cover the cost of shipping & handling. Send a private message.
regards,
Mark

The mercedes stars are cheap. The star's only 25 dollars with the whole assebmly peice. Its usually the damage people do trying to steal it. Like I've had people take a scrapper to the my rear mercedes star...cost 400 to fix small dent and repaint the whole trunk. I wounldn't worry about the star, more so the damage from amatur mercedes star stealers.

My uncle owned a older E class, and he had a theft problem at work. Mercedes actually has the flat coin style mercedes badge which you place in the hood instead and problem solved. He got it from a Mercedes dealer. If you want to try that give your dealer a call.

If you're really worried about it just put a flat badge on the hood. I have only once had the hood star stolen off my car and the kids that stole it got caught and got to spend a night in jail.

Never had a problem. I'd worry more about the damage they do trying to steal it, new stars are only $26 last I bought one.

i offer two alternatives

one is to remove the star and replace with a stainless steel sink plug. costs $3 and looks like it grew there.

also, i have a switch that can be put under the tristar in place of the spring that will honk your horn or whatever electrical device you like. cost me $50. i never got around to using it. will sell for $50 if anybody wants it.

new in box.

sharpen it?

I cut myself while replacing a star on one of my cars. Perhaps if your not worried about blood all over the hood of your car you could sharpen the inside of the star and the outside circle so that if someone attempts to remove your star a slight tug will cause screaming and a need for lots of gauze

Last time I checked the part was $26 anyway. I would rather someone steal the star than scratch paint or do something expensive.

I had mine stolen so I bought two. It seems having a spare of anything precludes ever needing it.

The stars are cheap.

Not worth the trouble - you have to re-chrome or it will rust and look like crap, now you are back to the $26 replacement

Yeah, a problem. Someone tried to steal mine off the 300D the other weekend, just got it off center instead of breaking it off.

If mine was at risk of being stolen, or was and I was still parking in the same place, I'd just not replace it.

Can't steal it if it's not there.

Now, if they go for the one on the 280, that's another story!

Mine was stolen last night, probably by drunk hooligans, I'm in college and parking it on campus. This morning I was outraged... the car just looks incomplete without the emblem. I'm worried that if I replace it will just get stolen again next weekend.
