How to clean differential?
Junkyard differential may be contaminated by dust and general bits. Wash with mineral spirits and soak in hypoid gear oil, or something else?

Wash with solvent as best as possible. Put it into service for a short while with cheap hypoid oil to use as a flush. Drain, then put in better fluid.

personally
if the drain plugs werent out of it i wouldnt think it would have anything in it. i would be reluctant to try to flush it with anything. i would just drain it and put in new lube and forget about it.
unless there is actual debris in the drainage. tom w
