Is there a scenario where a bad valve cover gaskit cause tranny to slip out of top ge
1992 e 300 3.0 Inline 6 .. Tranny slips out of top gear. It might go a couple of days with out doing it,or it could do it after a couple miles of driving. Sometimes if you gun the accelerator and let up quickly it will go in to top gear. It may stay in gear or sometimes the slightest movement of the accelerator it will downshift. The reason im hoping a bad valve cover gaskit is because the underside of the auto is covered in oil. The engine never smokes because the leak is in the back, but it soaked the tranny mount enough to soften it and require replacement. I cannot afford another tranny and hope its as simple as a Tranny flush. Help this poor boy driving a money pit.

Could use some more info on what kind of trans ! Not sure what softing of the trans means?? But a leaking valve cover to me does not relate to and trans jumping out of gear?? JMO

Manual transmission, I assume. Otherwise the post makes no sense.
If the transmission tail is moving while you're driving, it could easily cause it to jump out of gear. If the transmission tail isn't moving, but not sitting in the right place, it would likely affect the linkage adjustment, possibly causing incomplete engagement and allowing it to jump to neutral. Check that first. But don't let it jump out of gear. At all! That does serious damage to the transmission, which will be very expensive to fix. If you can't rely on it staying in gear, don't drive the car. Consider it broken, or soon enough, it really will be. |

further explaination
Auto transmission. The softening I was reffering to was the tranny mount when soaked with oil from the leaking valve cover gasket. Jumping out of gear maybe isnt the correct way of discribing it. Cruising in top gear, the rpm's rise. When you press the gas, you will find that its in 3rd gear.
My problem is probably not related to the oil leak, but would appreciate and suggestions of what the issue could be |

Oh good. You're not needlessly trashing a manual transmission.
Still could be the linkage adjustment. Less likely, but possible. |
