I have used this procedure to fix the loose screw on my 98 E320, thanks for the informative write-up.

I have found an easy way to remove the steering wheel bolt with only one person.

Open the drivers side door fully. Insert the 10mm hex with breaker bar at the 10:00 position (facing the steering wheel). Stand outside the car next to the steering wheel facing the rear of the car. Grasp the breaker bar with your right hand and the steering wheel with your left hand. Push down on the breaker bar and up on the steering wheel (similar to using two pipe wrenches with one as a back up wrench) and the bolt should break loose within seconds. If you are left handed just switch hands between the breaker bar and steering wheel.

I found that by trying to put leverage on the breaker bar while sitting in the drivers seat I couldn't get enough leverage.

cruise control

Driving a 1999 300td can anyone tell me the part number of the cruise control for this model? Jumping the gun by mistake I bought a A210 545 0224kz--LS 202 926 Q01. No idea if it could work but reluctant going through all the work and find no go. Thanks

After removing the two screws (seen in above picture), you’ll see the view below. You now have access to the turn signal module which is on a short connector and needs to be removed. You need to remove the cruise control stalk which is on a VERY long cable that must connect under the dash (??).

Note how all the cables are threaded and where they run. You’re going to have to put this back together in a few minutes! Remove the three screws shown below - - everything will come apart at this stage.

You’ll need to fully retract the electric steering column at this point so you can slip the plastic shroud off and gain access to the machine screwing which tightens the collar.

Plastic shroud slips off revealing the errant screw, here it is:

I removed it and there was evidence of LocTite. I applied some fresh LocTite, re-installed the screw, and corrected the orientation of the collar so the two tips were located at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock. Screw was tightened. Assembly is simply reverse order.

This job took exactly 1 hour with a 10 minute break. While it looks complex, it really wasn’t. The disassembly is logical; there are no odd little pieces or any “tricks” needed.

I’ll re-iterate that removal of the 10mm nut holding the steering wheel place is the most difficult aspect of this job.
Tanks for the write-up. Since I have the same model car please send me the part number of the control. Thanks

Hi all fantastic write up. E300td estate/wagon had some crazy random indicator and wiper actions when driving over uneven road surfaces, new switch assembly fitted in under half an hour after following this thread.

Fantastic info, thanks a bunch guys
