Recirculation Pod & Rough Idle

Hi all. I'm new to the forum and I've been helped greatly by just reading all the knowledge that is here. Here is what I have.

Recently I've acquired a 1989 300E w/170,000 miles. First, I gotta say I'm impressed with the performance and its ride. I've seen ideas posted on this site for my problems but I'll explain what I have and what I've done.

First the rough idle issue. This car runs great when I smash the gas and doesn't miss a beat. However, the idle leaves something to be determined. The compression checks fine. It does need a distributor cap, because it likes to try to collect moisture after a while and WD40 needs to be used to dry it up. When the distributor cap is all dried out, it still idles at about 500rpm and shakes. During idle when I pull the #2 plug wire the idle does NOT change to worse, as it does when I pull any other plug wire. I'm getting spark to the #2 plug, when I reconnect it you can hear it sparking. I pulled the plug and it was teribbly black and oily....this car does not smoke at all. So, could it be a fuel injector clogging up at low end rpm? I've replaced the all the plugs recently and have not yet rechecked the new ones to see how they all look. Its only been a few days. New plugs did not solve this rough idle either. I can rev up the car and at around 2000 rpm it smooths out and stays smooth. I'm new to the Benz arena so I don't know a thing about this car. Could this be an idle sensor problem? Or needing a new cap and rotor? I'm clueless at this point.

Problem #2.... the a/c. I've recently been reading about the pod replacements on the a/c's here in this forum and I just don't have time right now to pull the dash to do what needs done. The a/c has been converted to the newer refrigerant and recently charged. The pump has been checked on the high side and it is working fine. I've noticed that my recirc does not work and the center vents do not open neither...however I can put a long screwdriver in thru the center vents and press down on the flap and it will stay open, to allow air to flow thru them, but it will not open itself. I know the recirc isn't working because I smell outside odors such as diesel truck exhaust etc.,. when sitting behind other vehicles. Is there a short cut to make the recirc pod work or someway I can manually work it until I can get behind the dash? It would greatly help the cooling of the car as we live in Florida, and it so desperately needs recirc working.

Problem #3...ok so I only listed two in the title...but I just thought of something... this car got smacked really hard in the drivers side quarter panel. I'm needing a replacement quarter panel for it too...anyone have anything?

Thanks in advance for the great wisdom.

Gary

Tell us what the spark plugs are, usually you are way better off going with the stock plug and gap. If they are the proper plugs, then probably it needs valve stem seals.
Read the owners manual in regards to how/when the center vents will work and also in regard to the recirc, there is only certain times the recirc will work, and I suspect you aren't doing it right (I think only works in max AC)
