What's the part I'm missing from this photo? '88 300 SEL

I have an 88 300 SEL that is missing something. Not really sure what, and the car seems to be running fine, but I'm really curious. It is directly superior to the alternator and inferior to the 1st spark plug. It's not just that there are holes there, it's that the aluminum under them is so shiny as if something was removed before I came along.

On my car the knuder valve is connected to the johnson rod.

no that is the muffler bearing bracket boss.
