Mercedes has changed their oil recommendations recently. They now say:

AMG models-Mobil 1 0W40 (don't recall the change interval but it's likely still 10000 miles)

All others 1998 to present and beyond-Mobil 1 5W40 Extended Performance using a fleece filter, changing at 13000 miles. FSS, like the SBC brakes in the E-Class, is no more.

1997 and older 15/40 conventional.

Since 2001, factory fill was Mobil 1 0W40 to be changed at 10000 miles or so using FSS recommendation. I change my '01 at 5000 miles (paper filter) for no good reason.

And I've been using a Topsider for a long time.
