I have a 1991 300CE and I am wondering what the purpose of the 3"x 2" perspex panel in the door pocket is. It is only on the passenger side, not the drivers. it is not covered in the hand book or any other publicatiob I have.
I first of all thought it was an entrance light and took of the door panel to change the bulb but there wasn't one. The only wiring went to the kerb light in the bottom of the door. It seems to serve no useful purpose but its obviously there for a reason. Any ideas anyone ?

I always wondered the same thing about my 1990 300CE. Only thing is, mine is on the drivers side (left hand door). It doesn't seem to serve any purpose at all.

Think Larry has RHD, so it would be the same [left] door.

SERVICE BOOKLET

The service book is supposed to be opened to next service page & placed behind the window to re-mind you of up-comming service.

Service Book Reminder

Dude,

That's sweet! The little window on the driver's side door panel is for your service book reminder? Mercedes seems to always be on top of little details like that!

Thanks!

Jeremy

Actually, if you study the maintenance booklet, there is an identical sized square hole in the cover. As the maintenance services are completed, a "coupon" is removed from the pages when the service is completed. This uncovers the "next" coupon, with the next mileage showing through the hole in the cover. Just put the booklet in it's place in the door panel, and the mileage for the next service interval can be seen, even with the booklet closed, due to the hole in the cover......Gilly

Thank you all for the replies. I would never have guessed what it was for. I wonder how many dealers take the trouble to put the book back into the window. I also wonder if Mercedes built into the service the cost to remove the door panel and refit it each time ????? Or maybe you can slide it into the slot through the door pocket. I must take another look.
Being European myself (but not German)I like such attention to detail however as mine is a UK car with RH drive, I am really upset that they kept the window on the LH door which is the passenger side rather than move it to the RH side. (just joking)

It slides in there....
First owner took the car to the CA dealer and got everything filed out, stamped and sighned. Bu when I took it for service myself here on East Coast, nobody ever did anything about the service booklet. :-\
I wish I had a speaker there instead like the newer models.

I must be missing some thing here because I cannot slide my book in either from the front of the pocket or the back. It seems to me that the only way to get the book in there is to remove the panel.

Larry: I looked at that 300CE in for service today. It slides in from the back. I can't remember the year, but it must have been a 90 or 91 or so, as it has the 104 motor in it, but was a real early 104 as it still had CIS-E injection.......Gilly

Many thanks for all the replies . Yes it does slide in from the back. The problem was my service book is well thumbed and is a bit thicker than it was new but its in there now looking at me through the window
