Need advice on 560 SEL purchase

I found a car locally that I'm interested in purchasing. The price is very good, but I'm a bit leary of the transmission issue. What would you all suggest as a process to check out what is going on as described below but the current owner. Thanks.

"very nice mercedes has every option, power seats rear and front, heated seats rear and front, pw,pd,cruise, sunroof, power telescopic steering, leather ,everything, interior is in mint condition. everthing works on it. has 190,000 runs and drives great, but the clutch between 1-2 is going bad, still shifts pretty good. the guys at the shop said it would cost 1200 to fix it but i can drive it like it is because it is going to take along time for it to go out. do not have the money to fix or i would."

As I recall the 1-2 shift only applies another band... bands never seem to die. Could be low internal line pressure, modulator needs to be cranked, trans serviced, etc.

That being said, if the car is not SUPER clean it better be very inexpensive.

At that mileage you will need to do timing chain guides for sure.

W126's trans are not a big deal, worst case is $1200 for a rebuild. You can probably adjust the vacuum a bit and drive it for years as is.

I'd be more interested in the timing chain and rails, if no records exist they are due and need to be changed.

And speaking of the rails, you can replace JUST the liner on the tensioner rail! This saves about $30-40 for that piece... so you're looking at maybe $30 for all the plastic.

I would take a chance, depending on the price. The 560SEL is about as bulletproof as they come. And you can probably pull a junkyard tranny if it comes down to it. But like others here have said, with a semi-adjustment and a filter/fluid change, you may be able to drive on borrowed time for years.

I'm going to try to check it out in the next couple of days

The price is cheap, so I'm thinking that I'll likely take the chance. Thanks a lot for everyone's suggestions, and I'll let you guys know what I find.
