asr/abs light?? 1992 s 600

This is the 2nd time in about 2 weeks my asr and abs light came on at the same time? both times I was driving on the freeway for about an hour or so, the first time once I turned the car off the lights didnt come back on until today ( about 2 weeks later) it seems like both times it came on after a long drive on the freeway with some traffic.

My brakes seems fine and I can accerlerate fine. Anyone know why these normally come on? I read the manual and it said when the asr comes on I shouldnt be able to accerlerate, but I can with no hessitation.

Is this just a glich? Or what should I check?

Thanks.

One thing to check is a low voltage condition.

Take it to a mechanic, and he can check to see if the alternator is properly charging, and if the battery maintains voltage under load.

ok will do, but i was thinking that if it was low voltage or the alternator was going bad wouldnt the lights come on more frequently then 2 times in a span of almost 2 weeks of driving from eachother?

ASR/ABS Light

Put a voltmeter across the battery terminals. With car off, it should be 12V, and 13.5V or so when running.

Another place to check is the brake fluid in (both sides of) the reservoir. I had a rusted through brake line that lost fluid, and the ASR light came on. I would have expected a different light, but it did get me looking, at least! (Do you have any new puddles under the car?)

Have you checked the car for any fault codes? This is a good place to start.

Havent checked any codes at this time, hopefully I can do it next week. But today I got in the car and the lights came on again today ( 3rd time since I had the car) I went to the gas station and when I started the car up, they were off. So a few minutes later the lights come back on again ( and stayed on when I started the car another time after that)

But the interesting thing is that when I came to a stop i could see a very small cloud of smoke comming from under the hood by the headlight (drivers side) I'm assuming it's tied to t he asr and abs light? THe only thing I can think of is the brakes?? What would you guys start with on diagnosing this? I tried looking in the car hood to find where the smoke is coming from but cant see anything??

When I read about the abs and asr light it said car's abs doesnt work anymore and the car goes in limp mode? It's weird cuz my car doesnt go into limp mode and abs still works. I would think it was just something wrong but seeing that smoke has me wondering??

I wouldn't assume that they are related - unlikely that they are. If it was really smoke you should smell something burning.

I actually smelled a VERY faint smell didn't smell like fluids actually but just smelled like smoke a little. And I noticed the smoke. It was coming from the front drivers tire/ headlight region?? But not enough smoke to track it down.

Smoke is likely just a valve cover oil leak dripping oil on the exhaust manifold. It's unlikely related to the ASR/ABS light issue. Easy thing to do is inspect and clean the ABS speed sensors at each wheel. Best thing to do is start with getting codes read, if there are any. Many people seem to report that their mechanics tell them they need new ABS wiring harnesses. I don't know exactly how extensive a wiring harness this is as no one ever seems to report replacing it. You car is certainly within the years of the degrading wiring harnesses.

good luck,
Brett

Im going back to this shop that I went to next week I will have him take a look at it. I have a few things to do to get the car back in to near perfect shape. Fix the cigarette lighter, fix the amp, and figure out whats going on with these lights. Then from then on its just maintanance stuff hopefully.

ASR light problem.

I had 12 months of misery in my '93 500SL with the ASR cutting in randomly on 50 % of my journeys . A forum letter highlighted that I had not reset the wheel sensors after a battery change. So I 'reset' the wheel sensors by holding the steering on full lock for a few seconds on either side. Result >>> perfection!! > the last 2 months of journeys have gone like a dream >> no more Limp Home Mode !!! Worth a try?? Good luck. regards philespana.

QUick update, a few weeks back I had the shop take a look at it and it ended up being the brake light sensor. Since then it hasnt poped up at all. Seems like everything is fine.
