1992 Dash Lights 300 CE
My dash lights are out. Of course I have checked the fuse box. What has me baffled is that each light will work when you turn it on. But, all the dash lights are out, and the heater lights, etc. I can't imagine that it is one bulb that lights up all this instrumentation. Is there another circuit or fuse that I am overlooking? On other cars that I have had there is seperate switch or dial to adjust the dash lights (dimmer or lighter), is there such a switch or dial that I am overlooking. I am new to this car as you can guess.
Help.....Thanks, Bob |

Could be dashboard illumination control module or maybe that little red fuse on the back of the instrument panel that looks form the back like a bulb socket.

Where is the dashboard illumination module found, is it easy to replace?
Also, the fuse behind the dash, is that easy to get at or do you have take the dashboard apart? |

Fuse is in rear of instrument panel, easy to remove and replace.
Module is mounted behind the instrument panel. It's kind of buried, it looks like a large relay. Not technically hard to get to just a pain. |

My guess is Bad Rheostat. Happened on both my 124's.
You will need to pull the cluster using the appropriate hooks as previously mentioned. The rheostat is a dimmer. Left hand black plastic knob coming out of the cluster. When you remove the cluster it will be obvious whether it is bad. If bad you will see the burn marks. Easy and cheap repair. Steve |
